What Is Acupuncture And How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that involves gently inserting thin needles into specific points on the body, known as meridian channels. At Athletify in Newmarket, acupuncture is performed by our physiotherapists as part of a broader approach to recovery and rehabilitation.
A typical session involves 2–4 needles, though in some cases up to 8 needles may be used.

Once inserted, the needles remain in place while you rest comfortably for about 15 minutes. The process is designed to be calming and restorative, allowing both body and mind to reset.
The goal of acupuncture is not just temporary relief—it’s about stimulating natural processes within your body to improve circulation, regulate muscle activity, and encourage healing.

What Are The Benefits Of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture works by activating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Clients often report feeling both immediate and long-lasting improvements. Benefits include:

  • Increased Blood Flow: Improves circulation to speed healing and reduce stiffness.
  • Natural Pain Relief: Stimulates the release of the body’s own pain-blocking hormones.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Response: Encourages natural hormone release to reduce swelling and irritation.
  • Muscle Relaxation: Eases tight muscles and helps regulate neuromuscular input.
  • Enhanced Recovery: Supports faster return to activity after injury or strain.
  • Stress Reduction: Creates a sense of calm and balance during and after sessions.

These combined effects make acupuncture a valuable tool in both injury recovery and overall well-being.

Acupuncture in Newmarket FAQs

Acupuncture is one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also includes practices such as cupping, herbal medicine, and lifestyle recommendations. In TCM, acupuncture is believed to restore balance to the flow of “Qi,” or vital energy, through specific meridian pathways in the body. At Athletify in Newmarket, our approach blends these traditional principles with modern physiotherapy knowledge for safe and effective care. By combining acupuncture with physiotherapy, we focus not only on symptom relief but also on overall rehabilitation and movement restoration. This integrative method ensures that every treatment supports both your physical health and your long-term wellness.
In Ontario, acupuncture can be provided by a licensed acupuncturist or a registered physiotherapist who has advanced training in acupuncture techniques. At Athletify in Newmarket, your acupuncture sessions are delivered by physiotherapists. This means your treatment is rooted in both clinical expertise and a full understanding of biomechanics, pain management, and rehabilitation. Working with a physiotherapist also allows acupuncture to be seamlessly integrated into your broader treatment plan. Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or improving mobility, your physiotherapist can combine acupuncture with exercise prescription and manual therapy for a well-rounded approach.
Yes, acupuncture is often used to support women’s health, including issues such as menstrual cramps, irregular cycles, or pelvic discomfort. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, treatment may help regulate hormones, improve blood flow, and ease muscle tension that contributes to menstrual pain. At Athletify in Newmarket, our physiotherapists provide acupuncture as part of a personalized plan. For women dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction, postpartum recovery, or other sensitive concerns, acupuncture can be paired with pelvic health physiotherapy and targeted exercises to enhance comfort, restore balance, and promote overall well-being.
Acupuncture is frequently used in physiotherapy as a natural method of pain management. It can support recovery from musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, or motor vehicle accidents by reducing inflammation and stimulating healing. For many patients in Newmarket, it complements other rehabilitation techniques, such as exercise therapy and manual treatment. Because it is drug-free and minimally invasive, acupuncture is a safe option for those who want to manage pain without relying solely on medication. When combined with physiotherapy, it becomes part of a comprehensive treatment plan that supports long-term recovery and helps you move pain-free.
